Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43                                                                   July 20th, 2014

Sing: “We are climbing Jacob’s ladder, we are climbing Jacob’s ladder…” Such a lovely passage, I was looking forward to learning about it and preaching on it… until I read the Gospel.

…an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat…

…the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil…

…Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age…

In our first reading today, from the book of the prophet Amos, the prophet sees a vision of the Lord standing beside a wall built with a plumb line (drop plum line from pulpit). Okay, maybe not this type of plumb line. But weighted lines like this are used as a vertical reference line to test the construction of a wall, to see if the wall is straight and, therefore, sturdy. What do you think? Is the pulpit okay?
